Includes iron, total; iron, unbound; a calculation for total iron-binding capacity; and iron % saturation.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL (pediatric:  0.2 mL) of lithium heparin plasma.

Note:  1. Iron-containing supplements should be avoided for 24 hours prior to draw.

2. Patient’s sex is required on request form for processing.

3. Indicate plasma on request form.
4. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL (pediatric:  0.2 mL) of serum.

Note:  1. Iron-containing supplements should be avoided for 24 hours prior to draw.

2. Patient’s sex is required on request form for processing.

3. Indicate serum on request form.
4. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Males:  53-167 µg/dL

Females:  49-151 µg/dL

IRON, UNBOUND

112-346 µg/dL
