If patient has diagnosis or history of prostate cancer, order #PSA DIAG “Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Diagnostic, Plasma or Serum.”

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated.
Note:  1. Indicate patient’s age and plasma on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL of serum refrigerated.
Note:  1. Indicate patient’s age and serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Values

≤59 years:  ≤3.89 ng/mL
60-70 years:  ≤5.40 ng/mL

≥70 years:  ≤6.22 ng/mL

Plasma or serum markers are not specific for malignancy, and values may vary by method.

Note:  When age is not supplied, the results cannot be flagged as high or low.
