Performing Laboratory

Decatur Morgan Hospital-Decatur Campus/Parkway Campus

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Plasma

Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL (pediatric:  0.2 mL) of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated.

Note:  1. Indicate plasma on request form.

Note:  1. Indicate serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Values

Males
<45 years:  <93 pg/mL

45-54 years:  <138 pg/mL

55-64 years:  <177 pg/mL

65-74 years:  <229 pg/mL

>74 years:  <450 pg/mL

Females

<45 years:  <178 pg/mL

45-54 years:  <192 pg/mL

55-64 years:  <226 pg/mL

65-74 years:  <353 pg/mL

>74 years:  <450 pg/mL

CHF Patient Reference Range (pg/mL)

ACC/AHA Stage C                          <4,000

ACC/AHA Stage D                          <10,000

ACC/AHA Stage D Compensated   <5,000

Note:  1. The reference range is adjusted for age and gender.

2. Factors elevating pro-BNP include congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, pulmonary embolism, critical illness, and renal failure.

3. A pro-BNP value greater than 5,000 pg/mL correlates with decompensated heart failure.  However, not all decompensated patients will have significant elevations of pro-BNP.
