Gomori’s Methenamine Silver (GMS) Stain
Note: This test is primarily used for the detection of Pneumocystis.

Specimen Requirements
Usually only performed on specimens of respiratory origin.
1. Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name, physician’s name, date and time collected, initials of collector, and specimen source.
3. Place container in biohazard transport bag.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: Specimen source is
required on request form for processing.
