Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s) or a green-top
(lithium heparin) MICROTAINER)®, or a grey-top (potassium
oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL
(pediatric: 0.2 mL) of lithium heparin or potassium
oxalate/sodium fluoride plasma refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s). Spin
down and send 1 mL (pediatric: 0.2 mL) of serum
refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate serum on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
0-6 days: 30-90 mg/dL
6 days-12 years: 60-110 mg/dL
>12 years: 70-104 mg/dL
Critical values (automatic call-back)
≤1 week: ≤25 mg/dL or ≥400 mg/dL
>1 week: ≤40 mg/dL or ≥400 mg/dL
