Specimen Requirements
The optimal times for specimen collection must be based upon both the type of infectious disease process and the ability of the laboratory to expertly process specimens.
Collect specimen as follows:
1. Use a sterile swab to collect nasal secretions.
2. Immediately after collection, spread a thin layer of cells on 2
clean, glass microscope slides by rolling swab across non-frosted
end of slide. (Frosted end of slide should face up.)
3. Allow slides to air dry.
4. Transport slides in a slide/cardboard holder placed in a
biohazard transport bag.
Note: 1. Label frosted end of slide
in pencil with patient’s name, specimen source, date and time
of collection.
2. Specimen source is required on request form for
processing.
