Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s), a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube(s), a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), or a light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube(s). Spin down, separate from clot immediately, and send 0.5 mL of lithium heparin, potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride, EDTA, or citrate platelet-poor plasma.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s), or a serum gel tube(s).
Spin down, separate serum from clot immediately, and send 0.5
mL of serum.
Note: 1. Indicate serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
Risk guidelines from American Heart Association and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
Lower risk: <0.1 mg/dL
Average risk: 0.1-0.3 mg/dL
Highest risk: >0.3 mg/dL
