Test Code CK PROF Creatine Kinase (CK) Profile, Plasma or Serum
Methodology
Kinetic Reaction
Includes CK, total; CK-MB; and CK index.
Note: If CK, total is >204 U/L for males or >173 U/L for females; CK-MB will be performed at an additional charge.
Performing Laboratory
Decatur Morgan Hospital-Decatur Campus/Parkway Campus
Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s). Spin down and send 2 mL (pediatric: 0.5 mL) of lithium heparin plasma.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma and date and time of draw on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 2 mL (pediatric: 0.5 mL) of serum.
Note: 1. Indicate serum and date and time
of draw on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
CK, TOTAL
Males: 24-204 U/L
Females: 24-173 U/L
Note: Strenuous exercise or intramuscular
injections may cause transient elevation of CK.
ISOENZYMES
MB: <5.0 ng/mL
RELATIVE INDEX: <2.5
CK-MB | CK-INDEX | |
Positive | >5.0 | >2.5 |
Negative | <5.0 | <2.5 |
Indeterminate | <5.0 | >2.5 |
The relative index represents the ratio of CK-MB to the CK, total. Relative index = (CK-MB, in ng/mL ÷ CK, total, U/L) x 100. Due to different units measured (ng/mL for CK-MB vs. U/L for CK, total), this does not represent a true percentage and is, therefore, called a “relative index.” Currently, a relative index of ≥2.5 suggests the MB may be myocardial in origin. The relative index may be of particular value in patients who have elevated CK, total due to trauma or surgery.
Test Classification and CPT Coding
82550 - CK, total
82553 - CK-MB isoenzymes (if appropriate)
